Going to Hawaii ?
Try Maui. This island is called the "Garden Island" ,and for
a good reason. The Island consists of two large, extinct volcanoes with a lovely fertile
valley between.
In the valley and on the volcano slopes, sugarcane and pineapples grow in huge
fields. Miles and miles of them.
While there, the typical tourist spends their time touring the island sightseeing,
sunbathing, surfing, golfing, fishing, whale watching, and shopping. There is lots to do,
especially if you are young, healthy, and rich. For the rest of us, it makes a great
place to unwind, eat too much, and forget about "The Market" .
My recommendations:
- Airline: Fly as direct as possible. The trip is long,
so make as few plane changes as possible. Delta goes
directly into the main airport at Kuhului Maui, so
check here first. (Seniors rates are available.)
- Hotel: The Westin Maui is a great hotel, located on the
Kaanapali beach, in the middle of everything.
Hotel rates vary with the time of year. February is peak season, with
January and March close.
- Rent Car: You must have a car. There is no public
transportation. We used Avis on our '99 trip.
Good car (Mid-size Olds) at a good rate.
- Golf: Try the Kaanapali course. Twelve
courses are available on Maui.
- Day Trips: The drive to the top of the Haleakala
volcano (4 hours roundtrip) is a very pleasant experience.
The drive to Hana (7 hours round trip) is one of the most
difficult drives of my life. Over 600 curves and 50
one-way bridges. Be very careful !
- Dining and Shopping : The Westin Maui has a great breakfast.
Investigate Whalers Village next-door to the Westin for
some good shopping and some casual dining.
